Engine Company Operations Drill
Mariners Landing Pier

November 29, 2010

On November 29, 2010 the Wildwood FD along with the North Wildwood FD (Engine 2) duty crew and West Wildwood FD conducted a hands on "Engine Company Operations" drill at Schellenger and the Boardwalk.  Firefighters trained on standpipe operations utilizing the FDC for the dry hydrant on the North side of the Mariners Landing Amusement Pier.  All members were trained in supplying an FDC including such things as Knox-Caps, obstructions, and friction loss.  Members then hooked up to the dry hydrant "standpipe " and stretched both a 2-1/2" and 1-3/4" handline off of the outlet.  Members utilized the in-line pressure gauge to account for proper nozzle operating pressures by calculating friction loss.  It was demonstrated how the 2-1/2" handline  is the line of choice for standpipe operations due to its lower operating pressures, volume, reach, and penetration.  In addition it was explained that standpipes are hydraulically designed for 2-1/2" hose.   The other part of the drill consisted of pump operations and stretching attack lines.  Members went over proper pump procedures and also stretched charged lines up onto the boardwalk to simulate stretching up a stairway and around various obstacles.  The night was very successful.  Train like you fight and fight like you train!!
